Friday May 6th

To get everyone at a certain point at a certain time is always a challenge… With a lead singer living in Rome, a keyboard player in love in Marseille and a FOH sound engineer with an appendix problem, extra skills are required. On Friday morning we took off at a central point in Rotterdam to the Airport: Bart, Jaco Victor, Ger (our 2^nd FOH sound engineer), my son Nicky Jay and I. After an easy check in we had a gentle flight to Montpellier where, probably for the first time ever, it felt colder than in the Netherlands.

We arrived at the airport hoping that our hosts would be there, but no one was there. I received an SMS from Isabelle (our host) that she was delayed for twenty minutes because Peter Freestone needed to be picked up from the railway station. After having arrived at the Mercure hotel, we checked in and freshed up, then went for a walk to do some sightseeing and get something to eat. Ger turned out to be the hungriest of all by devouring a big chicken leg in minutes. In the evening, a dinner was planned with Coverqueen, Peter Freestone and the organisation committee. We had a wonderful diner, of course accompanied by a good glass of French wine. The same evening Mark and his fiancée Sylvie picked up Giordano at the airport in Marseille, and spent the night at their place.

Saturday May 7th

Set up and sound check were planned at 10:00 AM at Salle Victoire2. We didn’t have much time because also Coverqueen had to do theirs, and they would be the first band to go on stage. At the time we didn’t know if there would be a possibility to do some more sound checking later, so what could we do? Eat! We were offered a perfect lunch prepared by Isabelle’s mother and it was delicious!

In the afternoon it was time for Coverqueen to play. These young guys did a wonderful job and I was really positively surprised with their performance, fresh dynamic and promising! After the show I talked with “Fred and the others” and they gave me their first cd. Marijke (our merchandise lady) had forgotten to bring ours so I was not able to exchange, but promised Fred that I would send him ours by regular mail. After the performance, Peter Freestone did his question and answer session, and then there was an auction where I bought one of the paintings made by Sandra Lienard. I was bidding against Isabelle but I eventually won. It was too large to take with me since I did not realise I was travelling by plane, but Jeroen and Marijke who came by car were willing to help me out. At 07:30 the guys were back for a last sound check and at 08:00 PM dinner was served, again prepared by Isabelle’s mother. At 09:15 PM it was Miracle’s turn to hit the stage, and they did! Rock and Roll pur sang, wow these guys rocked the stage. They are getting better every gig, When will this ever stop? I hope never of course. At the end of the show the crowd were calling also Peter Freestone’s name and were asking him to come on stage again. Pushing him towards the stage was probably not a good way to do this, but the people asked for him, so sorry Peter… After the show the guys cooled down a bit with some Jack Daniels and then we had to pack our gear and went back to the hotel.

Sunday May 8th

As I remember we arrived around 01:00 AM at the hotel and some of us were in for some relaxation and decided to hit town and go and look for a good club. We found this at Rue Verdun and it was named Rockstore. A place where they play a lot of soul music, the people are all drunk but very friendly. The way they dance is really bizarre and no one dances in the same manner. In a way it looks like some people are doing aerobics and other people are practicing wrestling moves. Worth to see in Montpellier and in no way comparable to what you see in the Netherlands.

We did some dancing and drinking and went home at 04:00 AM. The next morning it was lazing on a Sunday afternoon at the beach of Montpellier, without Mark because he had already left the night before, returning with his fiancée Sylvie to their love nest.

We had a pick nick at the beach with fish pie and rice salad accompanied by French cheese baguette of course, and French wine. While taking our delicious food, some of us got slightly sunburnt, and some were really red like lobster Jaco. Fortunately for him the water was close. Andy (Isabelle’s husband), who also works as a life guard at the beach, checked the sea water temperature for us, which was 17 degrees Celsius: much too cold according to French standards. We told him that according to Dutch standards this was a nice temperature, so we all went in to enjoy the waves.

At 03:30 PM Giordano already had to leave to catch his plane back to Rome and we stayed at the beach until 05:00 PM. Then we went back to the hotel to fresh up and get dressed in the toilet, then on our way to the airport. Andy treated us for the last time this trip again to a nice glass of cold beer. And back we were on our way again.

I would like to express my gratitude to the friendly crew that Isabelle assembled. Everyone was so kind and they all did a perfect job! I think that an event like this, with this kind of staff it deserves a place on the yearly Queen Calendar. We had lived like God in France! Let’s meet back soon! Thank you beautiful people of Montpellier!

Vendredi 6 mai

Réunir tout le monde à un endroit précis à une certaine heure est toujours un défi… Avec un chanteur qui habite à Rome, un claviériste amoureux se trouvant à Marseille et un technicien de son soufrant d'une appendicite, des qualités spéciales sont requises. Nous avions rendez-vous le vendredi matin dans un endroit central à Rotterdam, pour aller à l’aéroport : Bart, Jaco, Victor, Ger (notre technicien de son remplaçant), mon fils Nicky Jay et moi. Après un enregistrement sans problèmes, nous avons volé tranquillement vers Montpellier, où, probablement pour la première fois, il faisait plus froid qu’en Hollande.

Arrivés à l’aéroport , nous espérions y voir nos hôtes, mais il n’y avait personne. Isabelle (notre hôte) m'envoya un sms, disant qu’elle avait un retard de vingt minutes car elle devait récupérer Peter Freestone à la gare. Après être arrivés à l’hôtel Mercure, nous nous sommes rafraîchis puis nous sommes partis nous balader pour admirer la ville et manger un morceau. Ger paraissait le plus affamé de tous, en dévorant une cuisse de poulet énorme en quelques minutes. Le soir, un dîner avait été planifié avec Coverqueen, Peter Freestone et le comité d'organisation. Ce dîner merveilleux était bien sûr accompagné par un bon verre de vin français. Le même soir, Mark et sa fiancée Sylvie récupéraient Giordano à l’aéroport de Marseille, et celui-ci restait chez eux pour la nuit.

Samedi 7 mai

L'installation des instruments et la balance étaient planifiées à 10h00 à la Salle Victoire2. Nous n'avons pas eu beaucoup de temps, parce que Coverqueen devait aussi faire une balance, et serait le premier groupe à monter sur scène. A ce moment là, on n’était pas encore certain qu'il y ait une possibilité de continuer la balance plus tard, alors qu’est-ce qu’on pouvait faire ? Manger ! On nous a offert un déjeuner parfait, préparé par la mère d’Isabelle, c’était délicieux !

Coverqueen a joué dans l'après-midi. Ces jeunes hommes ont fait un travail merveilleux et j’ai vraiment été impressionné par leur performance, fraiche, dynamique et pleine de promesses ! Après le concert j’ai discuté avec « Fred et les autres » et ils m'ont donné leur premier disque. Marijke (notre assistante pour la marchandise) avait oublié les nôtres, donc je n'ai pas pu faire d'échange, mais j’ai promis à Fred de lui envoyer le nôtre par courrier. Après le concert, Peter Freestone a proposé une session de réponses aux questions du public, puis il y a eu une enchère au cours de laquelle j’ai acquis une des toiles créées par Sandra Lienard. J'étais en compétition contre Isabelle mais c’est moi qui ai gagné. La toile était trop volumineuse pour que je puisse l'emmener avec moi, je n’avais pas réalisé que j’étais venu en avion, mais Jeroen et Marijke qui étaient venus en voiture ont offert de m’aider. A 19h30, les gars de Miracle étaient de retour pour une dernière balance, et à 20h00 le dîner était servi, encore préparé par la mère d’Isabelle. A 21h15 c’était au tour de Miracle de monter sur scène, et ils ne se firent pas prier! Du rock and roll pur sang, wow ces mecs ont fait péter la scène! Ils s’améliorent à chaque concert, quand est-ce que cela va s'arrêter ? Bien sûr j’espère jamais ! Après le concert le public a rappelé Peter Freestone, pour lui demander de revenir sur scène. Le pousser vers la scène n’était probablement pas la meilleure manière de faire, mais les gens le demandaient, alors excuse-moi Peter… Après le concert les gars se sont reposés avec un Jack Daniels, nous avons emballé l’équipement et sommes retournés à l’hôtel.

Dimanche 8 mai

Je me rappelle que nous sommes arrivés vers 1h00 à l’hôtel et quelques uns d'entre nous avaient envie d'un peu de divertissement, et ont donc décidé de sortir en ville pour trouver un club sympa. Nous l'avons trouvé à la Rue Verdun, le Rockstore. Un endroit où on écoute beaucoup de soul, les gens sont tous saouls mais très gentils. La manière dont ils dansent est vraiment bizarre et personne n’y danse de la même manière. D’un certain aspect cela évoque des gens qui font de la gymnastique et d'autres qui font des entraînements de lutte. Ça vaut la peine de voir ça à Montpellier, on ne peut pas comparer à ce qu’on voit aux Pays-Bas.

On a dansé et bu un coup puis on est rentré à 4h00. Le lendemain matin c’était « Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon » sur la plage de Montpellier, sans Mark , lui et sa fiancée avaient regagné la veille leur nid d’amour.

On a fait un pique-nique sur la plage avec des beignets de poisson et une salade de riz, accompagnés de sandwiches au fromage français bien sûr, et de vin français. En savourant ces délices, quelques uns d'entre nous ont été légèrement brûlés, et d'autres étaient vraiment rouges comme Jaco la langouste. Heureusement pour lui l’eau était tout près. Andy (le mari d’Isabelle), qui travaille aussi comme maître-nageur sauveteur à la plage, a vérifié le température de l’eau pour nous, qui était à 17 dégrés : beaucoup trop froid d’après la norme française. On lui a dit que d’après la norme néerlandaise c’était une température agréable, alors on y est tous rentrés pour s’amuser dans les vagues.

A 15h30 Giordano était déjà obligé de partir pour attraper son vol de retour à Rome, et nous sommes restés sur la plage jusqu’à 17h. Ensuite nous sommes retournés à l’hôtel pour se rafraichir et s’habiller dans les toilettes, (nous n'avions plus les chambres) et nous sommes partis à l’aéroport. Andy nous a offert une bonne bière pour la dernière fois du séjour, et le voyage du retour a commencé.

Je voudrais exprimer mes remerciements à l'équipe amicale d’Isabelle. Tout le monde a été si gentil et a fait un travail superbe ! Je pense qu’un tel événement, avec une telle organisation mérite une place annuelle sur le calendrier de Queen. On a vécu comme des dieux en France ! Retrouvons-nous bientôt ! Merci aux gens merveilleux de Montpellier !

Miracle at Montpellier festival confirmed

The association Freddie Mercury Hommage Montpellier commemorates the 20th anniversary of the disappearance of the famous English singer through a day event, on the 7th of May 2011 from 2pm to 11pm at the Salle Victoire 2, St Jean de Védas, Montpellier (34), France.

Program, 2 concerts with groups COVERQUEEN and MIRACLE, a photo exhibition, an auction and the exceptional presence of Peter Freestone, personal assistant and close friend of Freddie Mercury. He will share his memories at a conference, answer visitors' questions and sign copies of his book published in French in 2010.

All profits from this event will be donated to Sidaction and to the "Mercury Phoenix Trust", foundation for research against AIDS which was created on the death of the singer.

On Top of the World again!

Last Saturday during our gig in Poeldijk we received a long awaited phone call from up North again. Although we had not expected to return to Iceland before the year 2013 as announced on our website, we are proud to tell you all that it is going to happen a little sooner than planned: Miracle will perform in Iceland for two live shows and a acoustic session from March 3rd until March 8th 2011. Also some radio or tv appearances are planned. We are all excited about bringing Miracle in their new line up to Iceland for the fourth time, and hope that a lot of you fans out there are able to join us! Further details about our shows will be revealed very shortly. Miracle played in Iceland before in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Photo shoot planned
On November 28th the day after our gig in Leiden Miracle will be photographed by no one less than Jeroen Nouwens. Besides the live footage Miracle also would like to have some photo material for promotional purposes. At this very moment Jeroen is selecting some nice sceneries where we can choose from as a suitable location for our new band pictures. Pictures when finished will be placed on our website of course.

The set list is getting longer and longer
During the last gig at Poeldijk Miracle added some songs which had so far not been played with the new line-up. Don't Try So Hard, Elly's favourite song (from Café de Luifel) and also Scandal (in the original key) are back into our repertoire.
